The Jared Pratt & Son records include eight account books spanning the years 1837-1859. There are also outbound letters from 1842-1845 and an inbound letter from Leland Brothers & Co. of Charleston, S.C. (1846). The records contain accounts for the operation of the forge, foundry and nail works at Fairview, including information on work, wages and production costs, costs of coal and pig iron and amounts spent on the manufacture of blooms, slabs, nail plates, puddling and hauling. Copies of a large broadside offering both the Fairview and Harrisburg Works for sale in 1854, with descriptions, are available in the Imprints Department.

Jared Pratt was born in North Middleboro, Mass., in 1803. He and his uncle, Isaac Pratt, set up a forge, foundry, slitting mill, cotton mill and general store in Wareham, Mass., around 1819. Their firm was incorporated as the Wareham Iron Company in 1828. The Pratts sold out in 1834, and Isaac retired to North Middleboro.
